iPad 3G rocked @ Cat’s Hill
Thanks to everyone who came up yesterday and said hello to us at Cat’s Hill registration. It was a reminder of how busy things are at registration, especially in the dreaded early rush.
This was a great learning experience for us of what is good and bad on the data entry side of OnTheDay.net. Rest assured that when we are out of beta, OnTheDay.net will have had its operation fully streamlined by our field-testing.
Those who were paying attention saw me putting a brand new iPad 3G though its paces doing the data entry. It was worked hard and worked flawlessly. It’s an excellent piece of kit.
And finally, a word of thanks to Lisa Hern (promoter of Cat’s Hill) for inviting us to beta-test OnTheDay.net at Cat’s Hill after our first field test at the Altamont TTT. The ability to test our software for real greatly helps our development.
Prime Time: Cat’s Hill Classic
OnTheDay.net is pleased to continue our beta-testing program at the Cat’s Hill Classic this coming Saturday on May 1, 2010.
Can I upload a rider database?
Yes.
OnTheDay.net is developed with USAC races in mind. As a promoter of a USAC race, you have access to the USAC rider databases for registration purposes.
OnTheDay.net allows promoters to upload a rider database for exclusive use with their event.
Do you do on-line registration?
No.
OnTheDay uses the race entries collected by online registration providers. Promoters upload their race entries to this site to mange and publish their results in real time.
If a rider database has been uploaded, entries are cross-checked to ensure data accuracy.
How are you doing your documentation?
The documentation part of our site is created using wordpress.
Why the spartan appearance?
The OnTheDay.net web application is written with 3G smart phones in mind. Smart phone web browsers display on smaller screens, so at the moment, the site looks spartan on a regular browser.
Additionally, keeping the site text-based minimises download times over 3G connections. In fact, the OnTheDay.net application also works well over slower non-3G connections due to being text-based.
Formatting will improve as part of our development, but functionality and speed will have priority.
How do I connect to the site?
With smart phones, netbooks, iPads(!), laptops or anything that can connect to the internet.
Anyone who is interested can view what is public – this includes racers at the event with their own internet devices. Racers can therefore view race results as soon as they are posted to the site.
What is OnTheDay.net?
OnTheDay.net is a web application for promoters to manage and publish the race day registration and results activities at bicycle races.
Race personnel log into the site and update/enter registration information and results. Several race personnel can be entering information at the same time from multiple devices.
When ready, start lists and results can be published so anyone can view them. OnTheDay.net serves as your real-time, on-line results service for events you host here.
Debut: Altamont TTT
OnTheDay.net made its debut by being tested in the field at the Altamont Team Time Trial on April 3, 2010.
Racer reaction to the application was very positive with many comments about how cool it was for results to be available before riders had finished their cool-downs.
